Building on the Foundations
– Life Together in Our City -
TP-29

8th October to 5th November 2024

This is the last teaching block in the year. My aim is to give us all a boost in confidence and experience, by checking on our foundational knowledge and creating exciting, confident new works to finish off our year together.

It is important for all of us to understand or re-establish our foundational knowledge.

You will check your;

• Creative ideas and conceptual skills by designing your painting and collecting your resources,
• Drawing and perspective knowledge, getting the concept onto your page successfully,
• Tonal understanding and composition knowledge – making sure the painting will work!
• Colour theory, colour design and palette understanding… capturing the emotional content.

Think about it before you start next Tuesday 8th

1. Paste your ideas into your art journal…
2. Collect reference photos and examples of paintings that you love…
◦ in a favourite cafe…
◦ or a lovely room looking out of the window into the garden…
◦ or maybe children playing in the corner of the garden…
◦ or a friend relaxing with a book in the sun…
◦ or someone looking out the window or the door onto a scene…
◦ or a busy street scene…

I am sure you will come up with a thousand ideas of your own.

Greyscale Lemons

Grisaille, Verdaccio & Glazing.
TP-28

6th August to 3rd September 2024

Our next exciting art course, starting next Tuesday the 6th August In-Studio and Online, will be all about the incredible power of starting your painting with
  • a grisaille (greys )
  • or a Verdaccio ( greens ) underpainting.

This is a greyscale tonal version of your subject.  We then glaze transparent colour over your under-painting to add rich, exciting, luminous, layers of colour.

  • We will be using acrylics for the greyscale (If you do not have acrylics, I will supply these in the studio) and we will use both oils and pastels as our mediums.
This works beautifully with portraits, flower paintings and still life, which will be our focus for this block. Start thinking about  good subject references!
This is a perfect follow on from our last block where we explored the subject of pigments and colour mixing to create wonderful colour charts. This knowledge will really help you deal with this next topic.
  • What colours will you use in the layers of glazing to create the final top colour?
  • This technique is often illustrated in the astonishing glowing colour effects of the Old Masters paintings.
  • We will begin with portraits in Week-1, and if you have a subject you would like to try, bring it along so we can assess the potential and approach, but I will be supplying suitable subjects for practice assignments.
During the block you will need to bring your basic oils palette (particularly transparent pigments), brushes, canvas and liquin gel medium, also your pastels, pastel paper, charcoal, and sketchbook,

For those who have already arranged to attend this block in-Studio, payment can be made by Direct Deposit to ARTVILLAGE PTY LTD Westpac: BSB: 037608 Accnt#: 826379 (Your name must be included). For further details, contact Leoni on 0409 542 557

Mysteries and Magic of Colour Mixing. TP-27

Pigments, Colour Mixing and the Limited Palette in Oils and Pastel

June 11th to July 9th 2024

Colour mixing knowledge is an essential skill!

Working in a tonal medium like graphite or charcoal is very rewarding…and is often very successful. But adding in the element of colour can make the whole painting process come unstuck very quickly!

In this block we will be looking at some of the mysteries and magic of colour mixing.

  • We will make a set of colour charts exploring traditional palettes in oil and pastel

  • This will become a PERMANENT REFERENCE TOOL for your use.

  • We will explore the properties of different pigments.

  • We will learn which pastel manufacturers include pure pigments (very useful colours)

  • We will understand the concepts of colour dominance and colour harmony

All of this knowledge will be applied in completing several paintings using a limited and harmonious set of colours …a great way to apply this knowledge.

For those who have already arranged to attend this block in-Studio, payment can be made by Direct Deposit to Westpac: BSB: 737608 Accnt#: 739109 (Your name must be included)

Autumn.TP-26

April 30th to May 28th 2024

Commencing  Tuesday 30th, we are exploring the rich and thrilling theme of Autumn… “the season of mellow fruitfulness” as our next art block in the studio and online.

During the block you may choose to complete an autumn themed still life, or an autumn landscape, so start thinking about ideas now, and collecting resources.

Each week, as the basis of the lesson content, I will be completing, stage by stage, a painting demonstration in pastel and possibly oils from beginning to end, and filming the process as a reference resource for the block.

Our focus will be careful planning, knowing the subject, and interpreting the theme with skill and understanding.

This is a truly beautiful theme… One of my favourites! The possibilities are endless. Late season flowers, fruit, berries, stored vegetables, seeds, nuts, autumn leaves, late sunshine and harvest…the wealth and gifts of the season.

For those who have already arranged to attend this block in-Studio, payment can be made by Direct Deposit to Westpac: BSB: 737608 Accnt#: 739109 (Your name must be included)

Exploring Our Environment in Art. TP-25

Interpretations, themes, genres and pictures from start to finish.

March 19th to April 23rd

A challenging topic for you to flex your creative muscles!

We have just enjoyed a lovely summer season, of holidays, time in the beautiful Tasmanian landscape and coastline, cities, gardens, friends, family and opportunities to relax and explore.

There is so much in our environment that begs to be painted. From the vast and inspiring to the intimate and mundane.

From this theme of our local environment, we will develop personal interpretive artworks while building our drawing and painting skill set.

Expressive, Interpretive Portraits. TP-23

19th Sept. to 10th Oct. 2023

In order to understand the portrait process, and to prepare for the approach of Zin Lim, I will be taking the next block through the whole approach to expressive portrait painting. This will mean that whether you have the privilege of taking part in Zin’s workshop, or not, you will grow in your confidence and understanding of the portrait process.

So…. the next Block (over 4 weeks only) is commencing: Tuesday 19th September

Drawing and Painting the Portrait, using charcoal, pastel and oils, we will be looking at the most efficient ways to establish drawing the proportions of the face and the portrait.

 – Using charcoal …exploring the way tonal shapes help to create the likeness of the subject,
 – Using charcoal we will learn to be expressive and sensitive in our interpretation.
 – We will then transpose this knowledge into our understanding and use of colour using either pastel or oils, or both,
 – We will inspire ourselves by studying examples of some of the best expressive portraits in art history and in the contemporary art world.

This will be so exciting to visit portrait painting again!

I love painting faces, and people… full of the stories of love and suffering, the beauty and pathos of life, whether old or young… faces are endlessly inspiring.

The course will be available both in-Studio and Online.

I look forward to having you with us!

PLEASE NOTE: To attend this workshop ONLINE ONLY, payment can be made by Direct Deposit to Westpac: BSB: 737608 Accnt#: 739109 Please include your name on your payment.

Flowers, Inside and Out.
TP-16

9th Aug. – 6th Sept. 2022

Promise of Spring.

With the subtle, fragrant promise of Spring in the air, the theme for the new block will be “Flowers, Inside and Out”

I will be giving an opportunity for artists to develop their understanding of still life including flowers, interiors with flowers, both inside and also looking out the window into the garden.

There is a wonderful tradition in art history of including flowers in paintings. They are irresistible in their colour and beauty and the ability to lift our spirits.

We will cover:

  • The basic drawing and colour knowledge required in dealing with flowers.
  • The history and treatment of flowers in art and contemporary interpretations and exponents of this irresistible theme, including;
    • floral still life,
    • interiors with flowers looking past and into the light,
    • the theme of looking through the window into the garden,
    • unusual viewpoints and approaches to the theme.

We will look at the importance of;

  • Tonal value design, including indirect painting and the use of Grisaille – realism.
  • Direct painting and Impressionist approaches including the Tonal Impressionist method- Impressionism.
  • Expressionism and abstraction as a more internal, subjective interpretation of the theme.

Efficient Painting Techniques

Tuesday 5th Oct. – Tuesday 2nd Nov. 2021

In this block we will look at the way to approach your paintings so that you have a reproducible process that works for you.

We will look at a number of ways historically that artists have approached their painting process.

1. The formal academic approach
– the importance of accurate drawing as a basis,
– the reliance on line & boundary
– the modelling of individual forms
– the subservience of colour

2. The visual priority approach
– the approach to drawing as a foundation & priority
– the search for visual priority
– the finding of edge & form
– the approach to colour – broken & luminous

You will choose a number of your own subjects to work through
– landscape
– still life, from life
– figure, from life

Weeks 3 to 5 we will have opportunity to work with a model in the afternoons, to create an interior-figurative work. Online students will be provided with a very high resolution image, or instructions on how to set up your own model.

Our focus will be on the second technique i.e. tonal impressionism & visual priority.

Our aim is:
– to learn the process
– to become confident in the steps
– to complete a number of works as reinforcement.
